Affiliate marketing allows everyday, ordinary people to make money online easily. This is how many online home based businesses are earning their income and it is becoming increasingly popular. As an affiliate marketer you are able to start up a home based business with no initial investment, as affiliate programs are free to join and a website of your own is not required.
Affiliate marketing programs work by you (the affiliate marketer) drumming up business for a company (the merchant) by promoting their products online. Now many affiliates will set up websites or squeeze pages, then redirect customers to the merchant’s sales page. However, as I stated, having your own website is not required. Many successful affiliate marketers use blogs as a platform to promote their chosen products.
How Affiliate Marketing Works.
When people visit your website or blog, click on your affiliate links and purchase the product, you receive a portion of that sale as commission. Many merchants will pay up to 75% of each sale in commission, so it goes without saying, the more effort you put into promoting these products, the more money you are going to earn.
There are several different marketing programs and ways to promote your affiliate products, such as pay-per-lead, pay-per-click, and pay-per-call. Below I have given a brief description for each of these methods.
Pay-Per-Lead
These are affiliate programs that pay you a commission each time a person signs on to the merchants opt in list. The disadvantages with pay-per-lead affiliate programs are that you will not be paid as much as with other affiliate programs. On average, the amount of money paid is $1.50 per lead. So it goes without saying the more people you refer to the opt in list, the more money you will make.
Also look into pay-per-lead programs very carefully as some websites will only accept leads from certain countries. Make sure you choose companies that accept opt in subcribers from all over the world.
Pay-Per-Click
Pay-per-click marketing is pretty straight forward. This method requires that you place ads and bid for keywords and keyword phrases. The higher your bids, the higher your ads will be placed gaining maximum exposure.
When people see your ads and click on the link, they will be directed to the merchant’s sales page. Now as the name suggests, you pay your bid price every time someone clicks on one of your links. For the new affiliate marketer with little experience, this can be a very risky way to advertise.
Pay-per-click marketing can produce a very high conversion rate BUT it could also cost you a lot of money, especially if you are bidding on popular keywords. If this is the type of marketing you wish to do, make sure you learn all that you can before getting started. The whole idea of being an affiliate marketer is to make money not lose it!
Pay-Per-Call
Pay-per-call marketing is very similar to pay-per-click, but rather than being sent to the merchant’s sales page, the person is encouraged to establish phone contact through a toll free number.
As with pay-per-click, the pricing for pay-per-call is determined by a bidding process on keywords and keyword phrases. The more money you bid, the higher your listing will be.
The advantage that pay-per-call has over pay-per-click marketing is that because the person is dealing with a salesperson on the phone they are more likely to make a purchase. This lessens the chances of people opting out at the shopping cart to see what other competitors are offering.
There are all kinds of affiliate opportunities, so it is wise to spend some time researching programs and merchants that suit you. Once you have found the program that suits your personality, and your level of expertise, it will only be a short amount of time before a steady income is rolling in.
